Unveiled in 2015, this monument is located on the site of one of the walls of the Jewish ghetto from November 1944 to January 1945. During this dark period, 70,000 Jews lived here squeezed into an area of less than a square kilometre. They were forced to inhabit just over 4,000 flats with an average occupancy of 14 people per room, while many others had to survive on the streets.
A map carved into the concrete shows the outline of the ghetto. The map has small circular openings in its surface, through which one can see historical scenes from the neighbourhood. The monument also has slabs of Corten steel engraved with religious verses and a summary of Jewish life in Budapest past and present. These texts are in Hungarian, English and Hebrew.
