Commonwealth War Graves Vitry-lès-Nogent

On the General Cemetery in Vitry-lès-Nogent are seven Commonwealth war graves. These are the graves of Sgt A.C.D.Gent, F/O D.C.Law, Sgt W.a.G.Milne, Sgt R.V.E.Slowley, F/O R.E.Stainbank, Sgt C.Stapleton and Sgt F.G.J.Wood.
On 12 September 1944 at 18:22 departed from the airbase RAF Tuddenham, The men were part of a formation of 78 Lancasters and 9 Mosquitos, their mission: a bombing raid over the city of Frankfurt in Germany. For unknown reasons it crashed in Vitry-lès-Nogent. In the crash, all seven crew members got killed, they are buried in this cemetery. In total, 17 Lancasters were lost during this mission. The devastation in Frankfurt was enormous, probably partly because the local fire brigade was assisting in the nearby city of Darmstadt, which suffered from the largest devastation during World War II, the city of Darmstadt was put into ashes in an inferno that killed thousends of residents and destroyed almost the entire city centre.
