A German POW camp was situated around this school building during the Second World War. It was established in September 1940 as Stalag XXI-B, ment for Polish POW's. It was turned into a Oflag (camp for officers) in december 1940 as Oflag XXI-B. In the following years many Allied officers were imprisoned here. The prisoners were transported to Stalag Luft III in April 1943 and the camp became a camp for American officers on 6 June 1943 as Oflag 64. The American officers capable to walk were forced to march out towards the west on 21 January 1945. Oflag 64 was liberated by the Soviet 61th army on 23 January 1945. Around 100 Americans were left behind by the Germans.

Today, a memorial is standing here to commemorate the prisoners of this camp. The school building (picture 2) is the only building of the camp that survived the time.
