Commonwealth War Graves Duinrust Beverwijk

There are eight 1939-1945 Commonwealth war casualties commemorated on Duinrust General Cemetery at Beverwijk, Seven of them were killed on 12/06/1943.

During the night of 11 to 12 June 1943, Allied bombers launched a major attack on German cities, including Dortmund, Düsseldorf and Munster. No fewer than 783 aircraft took part in this raid, 38 of which were lost that night. The Lancaster W4791 PH-W, belonging to the 12th Squadron, was hit on its return to England. At around three o'clock in the morning, the aircraft came down in flames and crashed with a dull thud near Paasduin in Wijk aan Zee, killing all seven crew members.

Also buried here is Canadian Officer Howard Cedric Treherne, 22 years old, navigator, RCAF. His body was found on 14 August 1943 on the beach at Wijk aan Zee near pole 52.3. Treherne's Lancaster III EE195 crashed into the sea near Den Helder on 29 June 1943, killing all seven crew members.
