Fortfied Position Liège - Fort de Lantin

This fort was constructed in 1888 as part of the Fortified Position Liège, la Position Fortifiée de Liège, PFL.

During the invasion of Belgium during World War I on Aug. 4th, 1914, the fort finally surrendered on Aug. 15th, 1914. As evidenced by the many bullet impacts, there was heavy fighting near the fort. A copy of King Albert's proclamation after the outbreak of World War I is affixed to one of the guardhouses in front of the fort. This proclamation is dated Aug. 5th, 1914, the day after the Germans invaded.

It recalls the that the country was invaded despite the concluded treaties, and that Belgium fiercely defended itself and did not want to resign itself to its fate. The whole world saw that the Belgians did not allow themselves to be overrun and were full of esteem for how they defended themselves against this strong enemy. King Albert indicated that he would stand at the head of the army to fight for his people, freedom and justice.

With the invasion of Belgium during World War I on Aug. 4th, 1914, the fort finally surrendered on Aug. 15th, 1914.

In 1940, it served as munition depot and headquarters of the 3rd Infantry Division of the Belgian army.
