Maginot Line - Fort Schiesseck

The Maginot-Fortress Schiesseck was a component of the Secteur Fortifié de Rohrbach. The garrison consisted of 679 men and 22 officers from the 37th RIF. It saw little action in 1940, as it was bypassed and encircled by German forces.

It was attacked by Combat team 398 of the U.S. 100th Infantry Division on 14 December 1944. The fort's garrison consisted of elemenets of the 25th Panzer Grenadier Division. The next day, over 60 heavy artillery pieces fired on Schiesseck, while it was bombarded by Thunderbolts. By the 18th the Americans occupied the surface in all areas except Block 2, which resisted until 20 December.
