This fort was built from 1882 to 1884 and saw heavy fighting during the First World War. It was modernised in the '30s as part of the Secteur Fortifié de Maubeuge of the Maginot Line. It was attacked by German forces on 18 May 1940 and captured that afternoon. During the attack, one French soldier was killed. His dead is commemorated on a plaque attached to a concrete casemate. The fort was scene of fighting between the French resistance and German occupation troops in 1944.
The fort is currently in use as museum.
