This memorial commemorates the American airman Lieutenant Alvin M. Pollingue, who was shot down above Vaas on 17 July 1944 and died in the crash. Despite the strict German regulation concerning the burial of Allied airmen, Pollingue was buried in Vaas commissioned by the then mayor Monsieur Alfred Fournier. In March 1945, the remains of Alvin M. Pollingue was reburied on the American war cemetery in Saint-James.
