This 26 meters high obelisk is standing on the highest point in Velikije Loeki and commemorates the thousands of Soviet soldiers and officers who fell in the heavy fighting for this city from 1942 to 1943. The 8th Estonian Rifle Corps played a key role in the fighting. The folowing inscription on the memorial reads in Estonian and Russian:
"Eternal glory to the heroes who died in the fighting for freedom and independence of our Soviet Motherland!"
"XII.1942-I.1943. In the battle for the liberation of the city were involved: the 8th Estonian Rifle Corps, 257th and 357th infantry divisions, 47th Mechanised Brigade, 13th and 38th tank regiments and 146th dep. Tank Battalion. Eternal glory to the heroes who have fallen in the battles for freedom and independence of our Soviet Motherland! "
The ashes of an unknown soldier is buried at the feet of the memorial, as well as fallen soldiers from 26 Soviet states.
