Liberation Square refers to the liberation of Ede on 17 April 1945 by the 49th British Infantry Division from Arnhem, backed by the Canadian and Ontario tank battalions. From 1940 to 1942 the British Division had camped on Iceland and thus earning its name the "Polar Bear" Division.
There is a liberation monument with Maple Leafs. It consists of three bronze plaques in the shape of a Maple Leaf. The monument is in the pavement.
It shows the following texts:
- ALLIED FORCES
- LIBERATION EDE
- 17 APRIL 1945
There is a text in the street. It concerns the lyrics of the British song "We'll meet again" from 1939. That was made known by the singer Vera Lynn. The music and lyrics are composed and written by the English songwriters Ross Parker and Hughie Charles.
The song is one of the most famous songs of the Second World War and it evoked the same feeling in the soldiers and their families as they had in these difficult times.
The lyrics on the street are not exactly the same as the lyrics of the song and reads:
just the way you used to do
Till the blue skies chase the dark clouds far away
We'll meet again
don't know where
This monument is called "On the Rocks". It represents a champagne cooler with cap. It indirectly refers to ice and the Polar Bear Division.
