War Graves Waterloo

The old cemetery of Waterloo contains Belgian burials of the Second World War. These are the graves of, among other:
DAGNEAU Florent, fallen at Astene on 29 May 1940
VAN HERCK Louis, fallen at Adegem on 25 mei 1940

The old cemetery of Waterloo also contains the graves of resistance fighters, members of the Secret Army and political prisoners who perished in the Second World War.

At the municipal cemetery in Waterloo is one Commonwealth war grave from World War II. This is the grave of Private Arthur Charles Hammond, 5384659, died at age 24 on 16/05/1940.

In that morning of May 16th his battalion was attacked by dive-bombers, but with surprisingly little effect. In the afternoon, however, bombs narrowly missed A Company’s headquarters and a splinter from another bomb killed H.Q. Company driver Private Hammond, who was the Battalion’s first battle casualty.

Very special about this grave is the Belgian military headstone with British flag.
