The Old General Cemetery Capelle-West in Capelle aan den IJssel contains a monument and a collective grave for four Dutch soldiers.
The names of the soldiers with army unit, as indicated on the monument:
Jan van der Schelling, dpl. soldier II-III - 26 R.I. field army, killed 10 May 1940 in Grubbenvorst.
Hendrik van Gorkum, dpl. soldier M.C I -3 R.I III army corps, killed 10 May 1940 in Mill.
Cornelis Butter, dpl. soldier 3.3 R.I depot battalion, killed 10 May 1940 in Delft.
Teunis Jongeneel. dpl. soldier I-I-3 R.I.B.N.B, killed 10 May 1940 in Mill.
On July 12, 1940, the four fallen soldiers were transferred from Delft, Grubbenhorst and Mill to Capelle aan den IJssel. Saturday, July 13, 1940, the joint reburial of the four killed Capelle soldiers took place at the General Cemetery on Nijverheidsstraat.
The monument was realized on the initiative of a citizens' committee of 8 people, with Rev. J. Kars as chairman and H. Wegeling Jr. as secretary/treasurer. Through a collection held on July 6, 1940, an amount of 95,300 was raised for the monument. guilders collected. The communal grave and the space for the monument were made available by the municipal council of Capelle. Saturday, October 12, 1940, the monument was unveiled by the then mayor of Capelle.
Two of the eight initiators of the monument, Reverend J. Kars and printer H. Wegeling Jr., lost their lives because of their important role in the resistance against the Germans. Reverend Kars was executed by the Germans on December 29, 1942 in Leusden. Wegeling was executed by the Germans on 11 August 1944 in camp Vught. The path between the Nieuwe Westerkerk on the Valeriusrondeel and the General Cemetery on the Nijverheidsstraat is named after these two resistance fighters.
Nameplates bearing the names of the four soldiers killed in the former Dutch East Indies were later added to the monument. These are:
