This memorial commemorates the three members of Blackburn Botha L6417 of Air Observer School, West Freugh, which crashed in a heavy storm just short of the beach, on 28 August 1941.
Three boats with in total 11 men, who wanted to save the crewmembers, capsized and alle the men drowned. They too are commemorated on the memorial. A fourth boat with two boys also capsized but they were resqued. The two boys, Derrick Baynham and John Wood, were awarded the George Medal.
