Memorial of the Schalkwijk Resistance

At the roundabout on Jonkheer Ramweg in Schalkwijk, municipality of Houten, a plaque has been placed on a wall of a transformer house. Here are four names of resistance fighters from Schalkwijk. A name has also been added for a soldier from Schalkwijk, who fell in the Dutch East Indies.

On the right side of the plaque the text reads:
YOU HAVE IGNITIONED THE FLAME FOR US

J.A. van Dijk (Johannes Antonius) saw a German soldier steal a bicycle on the Schalkwijk bridge after the German capitulation. When he wanted to intervene, he was shot dead.

G. Hulshof (Gerrit) was a clog maker and had Jewish people in hiding in his home. He was arrested on 19-10-1943 and arrived in Meppen-Versen (Neuengamme) via Vught and Sachsenhausen on 16-10-1944. He died there on 22-03-1945.

A.A.J.A. Copier (Assuerus Antonius Joannes Arcadius) was a member of the NBS and after the German capitulation worked in fort Honswijk. He guarded German prisoners who had to take ammunition apart. Copier died when on 25 August 1945 Jacobus Ammerdorffer (the executioner of Amersfoort) committed suicide with a land mine. Copier is buried at the RC cemetery in Schalkwijk.

M.R.C.M ten Holder (Michael Robertus Carolus Maria) son of the mayor of Schalkwijk. During resistance work in Noord Brabant and picked up there. Via Utrecht, Haaren and Amersfoort he arrived in Meppen-Versen (Neuengamme) on 14-10-1944. He died there on 12-12-1944.

J.W.M. van der Velden (Jacobus Wilhelmus Maria) was a soldier OVW.1-8 RI. He was killed in Padang on 02-12-1946 and is buried in the Leuwigajah plot.
