This memorial commemorates the residents of Riquewihr who died or went missing in the First and Second World Wars.
Alsace, until then belonging to France, was conquered by the German Empire in the War of 1870 and officially German territory after the peace of Frankfurt. In World War I, the people of Alsace were drafted into the German army and therefore mostly died in German military service. Monuments from that time therefore usually bear the texts "Died for the Fatherland" or "Victoms of the Great War"instead of "Died for France".
After the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, Alsace became French again, but history repeated itself in World War II and thereafter.
The monument also features a plaque commemorating the 105 inhabitants who had to fight for the Germans. Of them, 28 were killed.
