This POW camp was opened in May 1944. The Allied prisoners were threated badly. Some 6000 prisoners of Stalag Luft IV were forced to march towards the west on 6 February 1945. Many of them perished due to sickness, hunger and exhaustion. Others were murdered by their guards. This march is known as the "Black march".

A memorial is standing on the site of the former camp in memory of the victims of the national socialism.
