Thomas Howie was commander of the 3rd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment 29th Infantry Division. He was killed on 17 July by a mortar shell during a battalion attack he personally led on the town of Saint-Lo. For this action, he was posthumously awarded multiple decorations.
