Memorial Thomas D. Howie

This is the Sainte-Croix church where Thomas D. Howie's body was laid out after the liberation of Saint-Lô. The second photo, one of the most iconic from World War II, shows the coffin with Howie's body near the destroyed church. Thomas Howie was commander of the 3rd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment 29th Infantry Division. He was killed on 17 July by a mortar shell during a battalion attack he personally led on the town of Saint-Lo. For this action, he was posthumously awarded multiple decorations.

On the church is a small plaque to commemorate this fact.
