German War Graves Augsburg

At the Westfriedhof in Augsburg is a war graves plot with 796 war graves of German soldiers and 362 graves of civilian casualties from World War II. Among the victims are 41 soldiers and 17 civilians unidentified. The civilian casualties died mostly during bombing raids that were carried out on Augsburg. Most of them fell during the bombardment on the night of 25 on 26 February 1944 when the British Bomber Command with 594 bombers completely destroyed the historical center of the city. The day before this bombing, the U.S. Eight Air Force also carried out a bombing raid on the Messerschmitt plant at Augsburg. Today, the center of the city is worth visiting, it's a nice center where you can hardly see that it was completely destroyed during the war. Almost all major cities in Germany have been destroyed during the war, but in Bavaria, the cities were rebuilt after the war by pre war Building Regulations. Thanks to this, Augsburg has the charm of an historical city although the city was largely rebuilt.
