Memorials Metz

These memorials are situated on the Place d’Armes, close to the cathedral Saint Etiène.

The first memorial commemorates the residents of Metz who were killed in World War II.

The second monument commemorates the liberation of the city of Metz on November 22nd, 1944 by the XX Corps of General Patton’s Third Army. The text is as follows:

"Le 22 novembre 1944
En ces lieux, le general Walker commandant le XXeme Corps D’armee de la troisième armee Americaine du General Patton, remit aux autorites Francaises la villa de Metz liberee par ses troupes.

J’espere et je crois que la ville de Metz sera a jamais le symbole des relations amicales qui ont toujours existe entre nos deux pays - Walton H. Walker."

Translation:
"November 22nd, 1944
On this place general Walker, commander of the XX Corps of the Third Army of General Patton, transferred the city of Metz, which was liberated by his troops, to the French authorities.

I hope and am convinced the city of Metz will be a symbol of the friendship, which has always existed between our countries - Walton H. Walker."
