Commonwealth War Graves Louppy-Le-Chateau

At the municipal cemetery in Louppy-Le-Chateau are seven Commonwealth war graves.

Flight Sergeant (Bomb Aimer) Demetre Zaleschuk, R/115908, RCAF, age 21
Sergeant (W.Op/Air Gnr.) Richard William Mason, 1333188, RAF, age 21.

On 16 April 1943 at 21:05 departed from RAF Leeming, the Halifax JB854 of the No. 408 Squadron RCAF with the mission: a bombing raid over the Skoda factory in Pilsen (Plzeň), Czechoslovakia. Theaircraft was part of a formation of 327 bombers, including 197 Lancasters and 130 Halifaxes. JB854 crashed for unknown reasons in Louppy-Le-Chateau. All seven crew members died in the crash, they are all buried in this cemetery. In total, 36 aircraft were lost during the mission. The Skoda factory was not hit, because a mistake was made in marking the target.
