Memorial Lancaster ND955

On the 25th of May 1944, the Avro Lancaster Mk III - ND955, belonging to the 15 Squadron Royal Air Force (15 Sqn RAF), crashed just north of the town of Someren.

The bomber took off with a seven-man crew from RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk at 00:03 hours of that same day for a bombing operation on Aachen in Germany.

On its return, the aircraft was intercepted and shot down by the night fighter crew of Hauptmann Strüning and Oberleutnant Apel of the 3./NJG 1, who had taken off from Venlo airfield at 23:20 hrs, in a Heinkel He 219 A-0 G9+EL.

All seven crew perished.
