The war memorial is situated just before the Hotel de Ville (City Hall) of Avranches. The monument was originally a World War I memorial (there are many of these in this region), but during the Second World War it was damaged by fierce fighting. The damages are still visible and give it a good symbol for both World Wars.
In addition, on the front of the monument is a new plaque commemorating the victims of war.
It also commemorates the wars in Indochina (1946-1954) and Algeria (1954-1962).
