PFC Charles DeGlopper Memorial

PFC Charles DeGlopper received the Medal of Honor on June 9, 1944 by his voluntary assistance with his automatic machine gun fire, while his comrades had to withdraw. By showing himself to the Germans to get their attention instead of his comrades, he is extremely vulnerable for German fire. Soon he was hit, but remained firing while he was injured. The Americans could pull back in this way and take better positions at the first bridgehead over the Merderet.
Later his body was found, surrounded by dead Germans and German machine guns.
