These are the remnants of the old prison of 1824 in Saint-Lô. The prison was destroyed caused by Allied bombing during the night of 6 and June 7. The present German soldiers flee and left hundreds of people imprisoned in the prisons. Many of these people were members of the resistance and died caused by these bombings. Near the door of the old prison is an urn containing the ashes of the dead prisoners.
Today, the remaining is a monument to the resistance fighters of Saint-Lô and the surrounding area. This memorial also commemorates local people shot and executed by the Nazis and also those deported.
