The Twentolmonument is a tribute to the resistance fighters who gave their lives for the liberation of Deventer, on 10 April 1945.
Text on the Monument:
ON THE DAY OF DEVENTER'S LIBERATION, APRIL 10, 1945
YOUNG RESISTANCE FIGHTERS WANTED THE BRIDGES OVER THE IJSSEL
AND SECURE THE PORTS FOR THE LIBERATORS.
TWO OF THEM PERFORMED IN THEIR HIDING PLACE, THE BUILDING
"TWENTOL". FIVE WERE DISCOVERED AND EXECUTED HERE.
THIS MONUMENT AND THE TOWING WILL NEXT TO IT ARE A REMEMBRANCE OF THEIR LIFE AND DEAD.
MUCH DESERVED RESPECT GOES TO THE GERMAN [medic] ERNEST GRÄWE, WHO REFUSED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EXECUTION AND WHO DIED A VIOLENT HERE [shot by his own commander].
