On April 20, 1943 at 02:13 hours an English fighter-bomber Mosquito II crashed in Smeerling. The plane skims over the Hiddinghstee, is received by the oak trees on the Schotenweg, crashes into the adjacent pasture and catches fire. The aircraft belongs to the 151st squadron piloted by David Allistair Sparrow and navigator Victor Gordon Brown. Both crew members are killed.
At the crash location is a memorial.
