Commonwealth War Grave Old General Cemetery Zaltbommel

Zaltbommel Old General Cemetery contains the grave of pilot Alfred Stewart Smith. Alfred was a man of 31 years old, married and a young father. On newyearsday 1945 he took of in his Typhoon at Deurne (Belgium) with destination Gorinchem (Holland). His mission was to bomb the crossroads at Gorinchem. During this mission the seven Typhoons of this mission came under enemy fire of German Flak´s. All other Typhoons succesfully returned to the base but Alfred crashed in Zaltbommel. Alfred was buried on this cemetery and was only discovered by his relatives after 50 years. Alfred was known by the family as MPK ´Missing Presumed Killed´. By the efforts of the family, Alfreds grave was found 50 years after his dead. The family could reunite finaly. All of those 50 years Alfred was never visited by his family, his grave was well kept by locals and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
