Commonwealth War Cemetery Lajes (Azores)

The Lajes Commonwealth War Cemetery contains 47 Commonwealth graves from World War II. There is also a non-war grave here. Most of the victims buried here died in aircraft accidents, eight of them on March 8, 1945, and nineteen March 14 of the same year.

The March 14 flight was a relief flight for married men who had spent considerable time at the base in the (neutral) Azores. Among them was Commander Colville, 3rd Viscount of Culross. who had commanded an eavesdropping post for the Royal Navy. He was initially to be picked up by a naval ship with a group of other men but air travel was a quicker option.
