Assistens Cemetery in Odense contains a plot of 23 Commonwealth burials, most of them airmen. Within the Commonwealth plot, the local people have erected a monument in the form of a square column, surmounted by two bronze eagles and inscribed "In memory of British and Canadian airmen who gave their lives in the battle for freedom during the war 1939-1945".
About 100 meters from the plot, a Danish Merchant Navy man is buried. His name is Svend Egon Nilsson, he died on 30 December 1945. The grave is marked with a Commonwealth grave stone and a private stone which also bears his name and the name of most likely his mother (photo 5).
