From 1939 on, this enormous bomb storage of the RAF was constructed i n an old quarry. Twelve metres of slate covered the roof, for security.
On 25 January 1942, two-thirds of the roof collapsed under the weight of the slate. A train of twenty seven wagons was completely buried, al well as 14,000 tons of bombs, at that time 14% of the total RAF stock.
All the debris was removed and most bombs were recovered.
