This plaque has been erected in memory of José Dewit, resident of Bruges. In 1944, he was student in the 'Rijksmiddelbare Jongensschool' Bruges. In this period, the 'Revolutionairy People's Party' (R.V.J.) recruted students of the school. This movement had no connections with the bigger Partisan's Army.
A student who supported the Germans spread German propaganda and even searched in the bags of the students. After a fight at school, he fled to the SS. In March, the Germans arrested 17 students and 1 teacher. One of them was José Dewit.
On 8. June 1944, the students and teacher were sentenced to prison or should be deported. José Dewit and Roger Rau died on 7. September 1944 after a wall collapsed because of damage from an allied bombardement.
