Memorial Jews Deported Amsterdam

This "Monument to the Deported Jews" is installed in the pavement of the Adema van Scheltemaplein located on the northern edge of Gerrit van der Veenstraat (formerly Euterpestraat) in Amsterdam.

Here, during World War II, the building of the former Christian HBS, housed the Zentralstelle für Jüdische Auswanderung. The building, like the SD headquarters opposite, was badly damaged during a bombing raid on 26 November 1944, and largely lost.

For the German occupiers, the Zentralstelle was an important body in organising the deportation of the Jewish population. Among other things, it organised the removal of Jews to Amsterdam, collected them from their homes, held raids, tracked down people in hiding, interrogated and mistreated them. From this building also operated the Colonne Heinecke, which hunted Jewish people in hiding for a fee (Kopgeld).

Unveiled in 2007, the monument consisting of 65 inscribed concrete tiles commemorates the more than 18,000 Jews who were transported from here to the concentration camps.
