Belgian War Graves Roeselare

On the Roeselare Memorial Lawn 257 victims of the First and the Second World War are buried, both civilians and soldiers. On of them is a police officer who died during the liberation of Roeselare (7 September 1944).

The German army entered the city of Roeselare on 19th October 1914. The Germans came under fire from the houses on Ardooisesteenweg. The invaders thought that the population itself had taken up arms. Due to the unexpected opposition of French troops, the Germans vented their anger and disbelief by hunting down civilians. The latter were dragged out of their houses, manhandled and killed. In the end, 38 innocent civilians were killed. This event is popularly referred to as ‘Schuwe Maandag’.
