There is a memorial grave at the Jewish Cemetery in Veendam. On the grave of Anna Caneel-Benninga is a stone that is supposed to keep the memory of her husband, her sons and daughter alive. In 1941 the Caneel family lived at No. 14 Boven Oosterdiep.
On the stone is the following text:
Reminder
to her husband
JOSEPH CANEEL
their sons and daughter
who were taken away
and did not return
The family members who did not return were:
Joseph Caneel, born 24-01-1873, died 14-05-1943 Sobibor
Herman Caneel, born 08-04-1901, died 30-09-1942 Auschwitz
Abraham Caneel, born 29-04-1903, died 11-08-1942 Auschwitz
Salomon Caneel, born 21-03-1906, died 13-02-1945 Langenbielau
Johanna Kato Caneel, born 03-04-1913, died 03-09-1943 Auschwitz
Of the more than 180,000 Dutch victims, 130,000 have no identifiable final resting place. So no grave could be set up for them. To prevent the names of these victims from being forgotten, the War Graves Foundation has recorded them in a series of commemorative books of 43 volumes. The names of the Caneel family are in book 7.
The youngest son Koos survived the war.
Koos Caneel, born 21-08-1909, died 01-07-1997 Amsterdam
