Surgeon Roelfsema was taken from his work on 29 September 1943 under false pretences by the occupying forces and thrown out of his car just outside Ruinen. He was ‘shot on the run’ at this location. This was one of the first ‘Silbertanne’ murders. The occupying forces wanted this to be an act of resistance.
Dr Roelfsema was a distinguished man and was known as a highly skilled surgeon in Meppel hospital.
The memorial stone bears the following text:
DR. E.J. ROELFSEMA
29 SEPT. 1943
