The cross was consecrated in 2003 by Archbishop Feofan of Berlin and Deutsland, a dignitary of the Russian Orthodox Church. It bears the Russian inscription "The children of Russia from the Mother Church" and commemorates the victims of the Red Army in World War II.
After the end of the Soviet Union, the Russian Orthodox Church in the Russian Federation developed into a medium to commemorate the dead of the Great Patriotic War.
