In Artyomovsk/Artemivsk in eastern Ukraine a winery is located that originally produced Soviet Champagne and that nowadays is specialized in different sparkling wines. During World War II a tragedy took place in the wine cellar, that is situated in a former gypsum mine. When the Germans arrived in the town in October 1941 they arrested 3.000 Jews and locked them up in the wine cellar. They were bricked alive and died of suffocation. The area was liberated by the Red Army in September 1943. Later a memorial wall was built on the location of the mass murder. The wall is known as "the weeping wall", because it is said to be the only place in the mine where water comes out of the wall. The water drops symbolize the tears of the victims. The location can nowadays be visited for guided tours and wine tasting.
