Crash Location Stirling EH897

This Short Stirling was damaged by anti-aircraft fire during a supply mission for troops near Arnhem and Oosterbeek on 19 September 1944. A fire started in the bomb bay. After the cargo was successfully dropped, all engines stopped. The tail gunner jumped out of the aircraft with his parachute. Shortly afterwards, the plane crashed into a barn close to a white house just on the south side of Koningsweg in Schaarsbergen.

only pilot Mortimor and Flight Sergeant Marcham were injured. All were taken prisoner of war. Today, the crash site is at Hooge Veluwe campsite.
