Commonwealth War Graves Wassy

At the Municipal Cemetery in Wassy are three Commonwealth war graves from World War II. These are the graves of Sgt D.F. Dales, Sgt B.R. Jardine and Sgt W.S. Whyte. On June 28, 1944 at 2202 departed from the airbase Pocklington, the Halifax MZ644 with a bombing mission on the railways around Blainville-sur-l'Eau, France to avoid the supply of German war materials to Normandy. After D-Day these types of operations were performed to support the advancing Allies. Presumably, the plane is accidentally shot by another Halifax, after that it crashed near Wassy. In the crash, three crew members were killed, they are buried in this cemetery. Four other crew members survived the crash and escaped.
