This memorial was erected to honour No 4 Commando and in particular the 177 Frenchmen of the '1er Batailion de Fusiliers Marins Commandos' who served with this battalion under the command of Capitan de Corvette Philippe Kieffer MBE MC. which stormed Ouistreham on Sword beach on 6 June 1944 suffering 21 killed and 93 wounded. Kieffer was later to be one of the first of the Free French Forces to enter Paris.
The names of the 177 men who participated on D-Day are engraved on the rear of the monument.
