During the Second World War, many inhabitants of Nieuwlande offered help to Jewish people in hiding and refugees.
Armed resistance was also well organized in Nieuwlande.
Johannes Post, born on October 4, 1906, was the great stimulator of the resistance and leader of the KP in the North, and he also played a major role nationally.
As a tribute to the people of Nieuwlande for their help to fellow Jewish citizens, they have been presented with a certificate of honor from the Israeli Institute Yad Vashem.
The original document and badge are displayed in museum De Duikelaar.
A copy of the certificate hangs in the display case. This reads:
This certificate of honor is in memory of the heroic deeds of the inhabitants of Nieuwlande, the Netherlands. During the Nazi occupation, they helped to save convicted Dutch Jews from deportation and death.
Out of deep respect for human and moral values, the inhabitants of Nieuwlande acted according to their conscience. They risked their own lives by hiding Jews in their homes and, out of true love for their fellow man, took care of the needs of those in hiding until the storm passed.
Thus they fulfilled the biblical text "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself" and the traditional Jewish saying "Whoever saves the life of a loner saves, as it were, the whole world".
The deeds of the inhabitants of Nieuwlande are forever engraved in the annals of the history of the Jewish people and serve as an example of humanity in its entirety.
