Central Remembrance Cross Forest Cemetery

This cross at the Forest Cemetery commemorates all soldiers and civilians from World Wat I and World War II who were buried here.

On August 8th, 1914, the first German soldier was buried here. Rifleman Heinrich Gossens.

This memorial cross (6.2 m) first stood (since 1936) in the cemetery of Ougrée-Boncelles near Liège (B) where there was a field of honor with German soldiers from the 1st World War. When these were moved to the large German cemetery near Lommel in 1956, the cross was returned to the city of Aachen in 1957. This city had donated the cross to the cemetery in Boncelles in 1936.

Buried there are 4,801 German, 235 Russian, 15 Romanian, 11 Serbian, 7 Polish, 3 Dutch, 2 Belgian, 1 French, 1 Austrian, 1 Spanish, 1 Hungarian, 1 Yugoslav, 1 Turkish, 1 Ukrainian, 1 Indian (British Gurka) and 1 Canadian soldier.
