In the hall of the Family Hotel, a display case holds a plaque commemorating the liberation of Groningen. The Canadians marched from Drenthe into the south of Groningen past Eelde and Paterswolde.
The plaque was offered by the Canadian liberators of the 8th New Brunswick Hussars to the E.H. Heikens family in gratitude for the hospitality they received at the Family Hotel in Paterswolde during and after the liberation of Groningen.
The brass plaque is a flattened hulk of a shell fired by the Canadians at the last resistance.
