Lancaster Memorial Papendrecht

On 21 July 1944 a Lancaster-bomber was shot down and crashed east of Papendrecht. The seven crewmembers, two from Australia and five of the United Kingdom were killed and are buried on Papendrecht General Cemetery.

The "Popeye" was part of a group of 147 Lancasters and 11 Mosquitos. It was on its way back from a bombing of oil installations in Homberg and was set on fire by anti-aircraft fire or a night fighter and exploded when it hit the ground. Of the 147 Lancasters, 20 did not return. The aircraft was salvaged in 2002 due to the construction of a residential area.

This memorial, nearby the spot where they died, commemorates them.
