Execution Memorial Spaarbankbos Fluitenberg

The impressive monument in the Spaarbankbos is located where 5 inhabitants of Hoogeveen were shot by the German occupiers on 1 and 3 August 1943.

The history of this fusillade is as follows:
On July 29, 1943, the Resistance would raid the distribution office of Schoonebeek, which was located in the town hall. This got completely out of hand, and the mayor (an NSB supporter) was killed. The Germans immediately launched an investigation and in the night of Thursday 29 to Friday 30 July 1943 two Grüne Polizei departments from Arnhem arrived in Hoogeveen. These were housed in the so-called Noorderhuis, a children's home. Witnesses assumed that the members of the Resistance came from Hoogeveen, because of the dialect. In Hoogeveen, a strict personal control was already set up in the morning of Friday 30 July. Many dozens of people were taken to the Noorderhuis. They were soon released again. After receiving the list from an NSB member on Saturday afternoon, house searches were held. The detainees were taken to the Noorderhuis by robbery car. Three of the 25-30 detainees from that Saturday were "released" on Sunday morning, August 1. Unsuspectingly, they walked out behind the Noorderhuis. They were immediately riddled with bullets.

The history of this fusillade is as follows:
Everhardus Duinkerken was a chicken merchant in Hollandscheveld and owned a small farm. Their house housed two Jewish colleagues, the brothers Levie and Manus van der Wijk. The two chicken traders fled when they saw the Grüne Polizei approaching and they had crawled into the hole that had been prepared for them in the hay shed. They sat among the potatoes, waiting for the coast to be clear. At one point they had to check whether there was still Grüne Polizei. As their heads rose above the potato leaves, they looked in their direction. They were seen, arrested and taken to the Noorderhuis.
There they were shot on August 3, 1943 because they were Jews.
