During the liberation of Groningen, the city centre was badly hit. The North and East sides of the Grote Markt were shot to pieces and set on fire. On the East side of the Grote Markt stood the infamous Scholtenshuis, on the NZ. stood the clubhouse of the Groningen Student Association Vindicat. Their premises also went up in flames.
In memory of the building, a plaque with the text: Vindicat Atque Polit 1883 - 1945.
Special detail in the story is that on the site of Het Scholtenshuis on the east side of the Grote Markt, Vindicat's new association building has been built. Soon it will disappear there too for the construction of ‘The Forum’.
This memorial stone was created by Rinus Meijer. Several of his reconstruction artworks are still present in the city.
