This bench commemorates the help the residents of Bergambacht offered to the evacuees from Veenendaal at the World War II.
The following text is on the wall:
Veenendaal evacuation May 10-18, 1940
Because Veenendaal and Rhenen are in the Grebbe Defence Line, it has been decided that all residents of these places should be evacuated. They sailed with inland vessels, including coal ships, down the river Lek in the direction of Voorne-Putten. Shooting took place during that trip and landings were made at Ammerstol. Many people were then transported by bus to Bergambacht and Haastrecht. After May 18, all evacuated people could return home.
In 1941 memorial benches were placed in both Bergambacht and Haastrecht.
