During the German occupation Melun was bombarded 16 times by the allies. During the liberation the city was further damaged by artillery bombardments. A couple of hours after the liberation the city was again bombarded, this time by the Germans. Because of the proud and brave attitude of the population the city was awarded the Croix de Guerre avec Etoile de Vermeil (War Cross with Silver Star) by Secretary of State for War Max Lejeune. This plaque on the city hall commemorates this.
