Stumbling Stones Ahauser Straße 21

These memorial stones (so called Stolpersteine of stumbling blocks) commemorate:
* Max Klaber. Born 1874. Deported 1942. Died 1942 in Theresienstadt.
* Regina Klaber née Rosenbaum. Born 1871. Deported 1942. Murdered 1942 in Auschwitz.

Max Klaber married Regina Rosenbaum. Max was a medic during WWI. After Kristallnacht in 1938, Max and his sons were forced to sell their business in Borken to the Nazis. In 1942, Max and Regina were deported to Theresienstadt on the same day, but Max died there the same month, likely from poor diet and lack of treatment for his diabetes. Regina was then transported on to Auschwitz where she was killed. Their 6 children scattered and 4 survived the war in either the Netherlands or the U.S. Daughter Betti died at age 30 in a mental hospital in 1937; and son Albert was deported from Amsterdam and killed at age 33 in Auschwitz, 1942.

Regina’s sister and brother-in-law, Emma Elkan (née Rosenbaum) and Moses Elkan, were deported from nearby Raesfeld and killed in 1942. Of Max’s own siblings, 6 (including himself) were killed in the Holocaust, 2 are known to have survived it; and the dates & locations of death of the other 3 are unknown.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntary residence of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim’s name, date of birth, and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
